I have got this interview on a video that was kindly sent to me from Jason Reed, and it is very interesting indeed.
This interview with Dave was by Ann Diamond and Richard Keys and was broadcast on TVAM, a breakfast television programme, in 1987.
AD: "And the time is 7:46 and our next guest is the lead singer with a group who have had an amazing 23 hits in the top 40, a musical achievement I am told which is unmatched even by The Beatles, but I'm sure you know better....
"Before we chat to Showaddywaddy's Dave Bartram, let's have a blast from the past, the early '70s. While the rest of us were into platform shoes and glam rock, Showaddywaddy burst onto the scene with rock 'n' roll".
The music then comes in - a live version of 'Bony Moronie' being performed by Showaddywaddy. Several still pictures of '70s acts and fashion disasters come onto the screen followed by Showaddywaddy playing the song on New Faces. (This is the earliest footage I have got of the band).
DB: "Iffy, ha ha ha".
AD: "Well! You just came back to us when he was saying "iffy" there! Good morning Dave".
DB: "Good morning".
AD: "That was intersting because that was when you appeared on New Faces".
DB: "Yes, that's right. That was 1973".
AD: "And you were a mere lad of 19".
DB: "I was a mere fledgling, absolutely".
AD: "But longer hair".
DB: "I had hair right down my back actually and I had to tie it back in a ponytail".
AD: "That was the 'All Winners Concert', so you'd already won by then".
DB: "Yes we won the first one and then we were runners-up in the....".
AD: "But it was a platform to a really good career wasn't it?"
DB: "It was a fix....".
AD: "Don't say that.... Was it?"
DB: "I think it was actually, yes!"
RK: "How did they do that?"
DB: "I don't know!"
RK: "Oooooo!"
AD: "He's not saying anymore!"
DB: "We were told it was fixed at the time".
AD: "Really"?
DB: "Yes".
AD: "How interesting".
DB: "We were told to be good boys and not say anything".
AD: "I don't suppose you really questioned it at the time".
DB: "No I was quite happy to come second actually".
AD: "I can imagine..."
RK: "It's not fixed now is it do you know?"
DB: "I don't think so, I very much doubt it".
AD: "He says with a big frown on his face".
-All laugh-
DB: "I do a bit of work for Central TV so I'd better not say anything against it!"
AD: "It's amazing just listening to that sound becasue it's not quite the sound that became famous is it? There's none of the heavy backing, it's quite a simple sound isn't it?"
DB: "That is a very raw sound. I mean that was literally our second performance on television and we'd just gone into the studio and done about a half an hour sound check and there we were on the New Faces All Winners Show".
AD: "Now what about, where have you been and why you're coming back and 'why' being the relevant word because that's the new single".
DB: "Yes absolutely. We haven't really been anywhere. All that's happening now is that we're being relaunched. We haven't had a record out for about four and a half years and this is the first single and we're all very excited about it".
AD: "Why not? What have you been doing?"
DB: "Well we had a few problems. We were five years ago an eight-piece band, we're now actually a six-piece. We've cut down for a couple of reasons, one left because of ill-health, I think he got a bit too old! Other problems, but we seem to have overcome those and it feels sort of very harmonious at the moment and everyone's really eager to go for it again".
RK: "There's been a couple of naughties going on behind the scenes has there? You've shed a couple of the problems perhaps?"
AD: "....Internal conflict...?"
RK: "You get to a point you know each other so well you start arguing and bickering?"
DB: "Oh yes, there's bickering but there's bickering in every band. But about five years ago there were problems with inflated ego's and problems of that nature, but we seem to have kicked those out the door".
RK: "I was told that at one time it was so bad in fact you used to record at seperate studios and then two tracks would be mixed together is that right?
AD: "Is that true?"
DB: "The tracks weren't actually mixed together. Three of the band would go off to one studio and four of the band would go to another studio and we'd just do seperate tracks. I mean our last album was a disgrace - the last one we did for RCA in 1983 I think it was".
RK: "Musically you mean?"
DB: "Yes is was a total mish-mash."
AD: "Beacause of things like that?"
DB: "There was just no continuity, all the enthusiasm had gone and as I said there was inflated ego's and it had just lost it's magic altogether. It had lost it's endevour in fact".
AD: "Are those problems cured?"
DB: "Very much so, very much so. I mean that's partly why we haven't had a single out for so long because we were ironing out all the problems."
And that's it! So it looks like there was a lot of conflict within the band from '83 onwards. Dave said a member had left because of ill health. I believe this was Malcolm. He went to run his pub but I believe he had a bad knee as well. The 'inflated ego's' thing seems to point at Malc, Russ or Buddy. The RCA album was of course 'Living Legends' and I have to agree with Dave, it isn't their best album. However I think it does contain a couple of good tracks in my opinion, 'Who Put The Bomp' and 'Fooling Around With My Heart'. I have to say it is the album I least listen to as well.
Finally, the clock now showing 8.53am on the screen, Ann Diamond returns:
AD: "And now the moment music fans have been waiting for. It's the fabulous Showaddywaddy performing live on TVAM this morning - their classic hit 'Three Steps To Heaven', and there they are".
The line-up features Ray Martinez, but no Buddy so he have just left by this point, and Trevor is on the drums!
