Romeo Challenger is the band's main drummer. He's a good drummer by any standards as shown by his solo on stage which is crisp, technically excellend and even humourous.
"Originally, I used to be a guitarist", says Romeo, But I just couldn't play it , so I took up what I though was the easiest thing. I started playing when I was 13 and took a lot of lessons which have been very useful. The first band I played with was called 'Black Widow'. We were based in London, but when that band folded, I returned to Leicester and replied to an advert for a drummer in the local paper. The band was 'The Choice;, one of the two bands that eventually joined together to become Showaddywaddy".
Like most of the band, Romeo has a wide taste in music including Led Zepplin, Herbie Mann and amongst newer bands like 'The Specials'.
"I like 'The Specials' probably because the Ska era was probably my era. I'm not really old enough to have been a real teddy-boy, and although I like the music, there's something special about the music of your teens. Showaddywadd seem to remain constantly successful, and for that I am very grateful".
Malcolm Allured, alias 'The Duke', one of the band's drummers, occasional singer and premier dancer, has the onstage persona of a troublemaker. He's the one who feigns punches and kicks at the rest of the band during choreographed set-pieces.
The Duke had his first drum-kit at the age of 10, and at 14 wen to a dance hall in Leicester called the Trocadero - immortalised in Showaddywaddy's song of the same name, "And from that moment on", he says, "I knew I just had to play drums".
The Duke spent some time in the Merchant Navy, and during the mid-sixties teamed with Buddy Gask to play with a band which toured Europe playing the night-clubs and American bases.
He helped form the "Golden Hammers" from which Showaddywaddy eventually evolved. "I love rock 'n' roll, it's my job and it's what I do best. Many bands have come and gone over the last eight years and I'm pleased we're still and doing well. But then, like The Drifters, I think there will always be a Showaddywaddy".
